A new study has shown satisfactory results after hip arthroscopy in patients with femoroacetabular impingement and early osteoarthritis (Tonnis grade 1).
The aim of the study was to compare the results of hip arthroscopy for the treatment of femoroacetabular impingement in patients with osteoarthritis of the hip of Tonnis grade 1 against patients of Tonnis grade 0, with follow-up over a five-year period. The publication was a cohort study of level of evidence III.
The investigators identified patients who had undergone hip arthroscopy for femoroacetabular impingement between January 2012 and December 2015. The results of patients with grade 1 osteoarthritis of the hip were compared with those of patients without osteoarthritis. The patients were assessed using the hip outcome scales Hip Outcome Score–Activities of Daily Living (HOS-ADL), HOS–Sports Subscale (HOS-SS), modified Harris Hip Score, and International Hip Outcome Tool. The data were collected preoperatively and five years postoperatively, and were compared and analysed with statistical tools.
The authors concluded that patients with Tonnis grade 1 osteoarthritis showed significant improvement in the outcome scores after hip arthroscopy for the treatment of femoroacetabular impingement. They did, however, have significantly lower scores than patients without osteoarthritis.
