In a systematic review, reports from national databases and clinical studies on the revision rates of total joint replacements were identified and analysed, calculated as revisions per 100 observed implant years.
After total hip arthroplasty, 1.29 revisions per 100 observed implant years were recorded. The results after total knee arthroplasty were 1.26 revisions per 100 observed implant years, and 1.53 for unicompartmental knee arthroplasty. After total ankle arthroplasty, 3.29 revisions per 100 observed implant years were recorded.
The results for hip and knee arthroplasty were almost identical. The revision rates that should be expected are calculated at 6% at five years and 12% after ten years.
