"A systematic review of the literature on the management of septic arthritis in children"
The authors reviewed 154 articles on the most appropriate management of septic arthritis in children. The search was carried out in the Medline, Embase, Cinahl and Cochrane Library databases.
The review showed that no diagnostic method for septic arthritis is sufficiently reliable for its diagnosis. It also appeared that the role of aspiration, arthrotomy and arthroscopy, as well as the duration of antibiotic treatment, is not well established.
They concluded that further multicentre studies are required in order to determine the ideal management of septic arthritis in children.
