The aim of a study recently published in the American journal “Arthroscopy” was to identify the radiographic measurements that predict chondral damage of the hip acetabulum in patients with femoroacetabular impingement who undergo hip arthroscopy.
Patients who had undergone hip arthroscopy between 2008 and 2020 were assessed, and measurements were taken, including grading of osteoarthritis (Tonnis scale), the lateral center edge angle (LCEA) and the alpha angle, while at the same time the chondral damage of the acetabulum was graded using the Outerbridge and Acetabular Labrum Articular Disruption scoring systems.
A total of 1485 patients were assessed and a statistical analysis of the data was performed.
The authors concluded that the alpha angle on the Dunn radiographic view is a major predictor of chondral damage of the acetabulum.
